EQUINE ACUPRESSURE
Acupressure is an ancient method of healing that originated in China around 5000 years ago. It precedes acupuncture which is administered using needles. Both are based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
Acupressure is a style of shiatsu (from the Japanese "shi" finger, and "atsu" pressure) and uses points on energetic pathways called meridians. It utilizes the power of touch, one of the most natural and intuitive forms of healing. Light pressure is applied directly to specific points with fingers, hands, elbows, etc. It works with animals, (horses, dogs, cats, birds, pigs, cattle, to name a few), as well as humans.
Ideally, acupressure is used as a preventative measure by maintaining balance in your horse from an energetic perspective. If energy is out of balance, symptoms appear. A balanced horse is a healthy horse. According to TCM, energetic imbalances can lead to disease if left unattended.
Acupressure can be used to help solve existing problems and accelerate recovery from disease, surgery, or injury. It can also help in what may seem to be performance or behavioral problems, when in reality the horse may be in pain. Without the ability to communicate effectively, an animal in pain may exhibit unusual behavior. By massaging or working points to release energy blocks along specific energetic pathways (meridians), your horse can be kept healthy, flexible and happy.
Acupressure also addresses emotional problems. Moving to another home, losing a pasture mate, boredom from being in a stall all day, or even stress from previous ill treatment, can cause energetic imbalances.
